Enjoy a pint at one (or all) of Portland’s 80+ breweries

IMG_0331Portland is home to breweries galore and some of the finest beer on Earth. Since the early 1980s, Portland brewers have been hard at work, pioneering the craft beer movement with fresh ingredients like Willamette Valley hops and Bull Run water. Along with bustling brewpubs and a calendar overflowing with beer-themed events, Portland brewers’ innovative creations make Portland a must-visit beer destination.

Sample craft spirits on Distillery Row

IMG_0334In a traditional beer town just minutes from one of North America’s great wine regions, Portland’s under-sung distillery scene is still largely under the radar nationally, but growing in vibrancy ever year. Many distilleries are part of the Distillery Row group and its Passport Program for discounts, though the scene has grown beyond its traditional bounds in inner Southeast Portland.

With so many newer distilleries, younger spirits like gin and vodka tend to predominate, though some of the older ones are achieving increasingly distinctive results with their whiskeys. Some of Portland's most celebrated spirits include New Deal’s bourbon, Martin Ryan's dry gin, Westward single-malt whiskey, Stone Barn’s green walnut liqueur, and Vinn’s baijiu. But that's just the tip of the iceberg — an iceberg that also contains Portland aquavit, absinthe, herb-infused liqueurs, and more surprises.

Grab lunch at a food cart

IMG_0333Portland currently has somewhere around 600 food carts in operation.  Wow!  Unlike some cities, where the carts are on the sidewalk and are removed each evening, Portland’s food carts are larger in size and more permanent in nature.  They are required to have the ability to move, although once they are in a pod, they stay there for a while.  For the most part, I see relatively low turnover.  Carts often stay in the same spot for years.  Although through the year, there may be a cart or two that leaves the pod and a new one takes their place.

For a map of food cart pods, click Here.

Explore the Columbia River Gorge

IMG_0107

The Columbia River Gorge stretches for more than 80 miles as the Columbia River winds westward through the Cascade Range, forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. Three volcanoes dominate the Cascades and are major attractions when visiting the Gorge. Majestic Mt. Hood is the highest point in Oregon. It is one of the three dormant volcanoes in this region, with Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens located across the river in Washington state.

The western Gorge, with an average annual rainfall of 75 inches, is lush and green with misty mountains, old growth forest and over 40 plus waterfalls. The eastern Gorge, with an annual rainfall of less than 15 inches, is a region of rocky bluffs, rolling hills, desert wildflowers and wide open spaces.

Just taking a drive through the Columbia River Gorge and exploring the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway is an experience in itself, as you will be in awe of the spectacular geological wonders.
